Abscisic acid (ABA) is a naturally occurring plant hormone that plays a crucial role in the regulation of plant growth and various physiological processes. It is involved in key functions such as leaf senescence (aging), plant dormancy, and seed germination control.
Over the past two decades, the significance of ABA in plant physiology has been extensively studied. Often referred to as a “stress hormone,” abscisic acid plays a vital role in helping plants respond to environmental stresses such as drought, salinity, and temperature variations.
ABA is chemically stable and can dissolve in hot water without degradation, making it suitable for practical applications. One of its most important physiological roles is the regulation of stomatal closure, particularly under conditions where water conservation is critical or when carbon dioxide demand is low. This function helps plants reduce water loss and maintain internal balance during stress conditions.
Additionally, abscisic acid is known to inhibit seed germination, preventing premature growth immediately after seed formation and ensuring proper timing for germination under favorable conditions.
