Methyl Methacrylate (MMA) is an unsaturated ester that has several uses in polymer manufacturing. It is a clear liquid with a characteristic ester odor.
There are several synthetic routes to MMA. The most widely used are a three-step sequence that begins with acetone and HCN and proceeds through acetone cyanohydrin; and a two-step process that begins with the reaction of ethylene and methanol to produce methyl propionate.
By far the greatest volume of MMA is polymerized to the homopolymer poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). The polymer is a clear plastic that is known by the familiar trade names Lucite and Plexiglas.
MMA is also copolymerized with styrene and butadiene to make an additive to poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) that improves its properties. MMA is also transesterified to make specialty methacrylate monomers.

Methyl methacrylate is an important chemical as it is the monomer for polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) polymers and copolymers.MMA is also polymerised to form lubricant viscosity modifiers, dispersions, molding/extrusion powder, and coatings. Methoxy propyl acetate, also known as propylene glycol monomethyl ether acetate, is a clear, colourless liquid with a mild ether-like odour. It is only slightly soluble in water but miscible with most common organic solvents. Methoxy propyl acetate is slightly hygroscopic, relatively fast evaporating and has a low viscosity. It enters into reactions which are characteristic of both esters and ethers, displaying their good solvent power.
Methoxy propyl acetate is produced by reacting propylene oxide with methanol using a catalyst.
Product Application:
Selected applications of Methoxypropyl Acetate are presented below. By virtue of its good solvent power for numerous resins and dyes, Methoxypropyl Acetate can be used as a solvent, flow improver and coalescent in coatings. It is particularly suitable for coatings containing polyisocyanates. In this case, it is important that the peroxide fraction is as small as possible, as otherwise the colour of the final product may change. Methoxy Propanol (PM) is a colourless highly flammable liquid that is soluble in water. It is a methoxy alcohol derivative with the formula of C4H10O2. It is an organic solvent with a variety of industrial and commercial uses. Methoxy Propanol is mainly used in the production of propylene glycol methyl ether acetate (also known as PMA). Similar to other glycol ethers, it is used as a carrier solvent in printing inks. Furthermore is it used as industrial and commercial paint stripper, paints, varnishes and inks.
Product Application:
Methoxy propanol is predominately used in the manufacture of propylene glycol methyl ether acetate (otherwise known as PMA) and is also used in industrial and commercial products including paints, varnishes, inks, synthetic resin and rubber adhesives, and automotive and oven cleaners. It is also used as a cleaning agent in the LCD and electronics industry.

Methoxy Propanol has a specific gravity of 0.924 and a flash point of 33° C and is therefore highly flammable so should be stored in a cool, dry and well-ventilated area that is free from sources of ignition.
