Nonanoic acid, also called pelargonic acid, is an organic compound with structural formula CH3(CH2)7CO2H. It is a nine-carbon fatty acid. Nonanoic acid is a colorless oily liquid with an unpleasant, rancid odor. It is nearly insoluble in water, but very soluble in organic solvents. The esters and salts of nonanoic acid are called nonanoates.

Product Application:
Nonanoic acid occurs naturally as esters in the oil of pelargonium. Together with azelaic acid, it is produced industrially by ozonolysis of oleic acid.
Synthetic esters of nonanoic acid, such as methyl nonanoate, are used as flavorings. Nonanoic acid is also used in the preparation of plasticizers and lacquers. The derivative 4-nonanoylmorpholine is an ingredient in some pepper sprays. The ammonium salt of nonanoic acid, ammonium nonanoate, is an herbicide. It is commonly used in conjunction with glyphosate, a non-selective herbicide, for a quick burn-down effect in the control of weeds in turfgrass.

Methyl Amyl Ketone (MAK) is a very good solvent for cellulosic lacquers, acrylic lacquers, and high-solids coatings. Because regulations limit the weight of solvent per gallon of coating, formulators favor the use of low-density solvents that help reduce the VOC content of a coating. Methyl formate is used primarily to manufacture formamide, dimethylformamide, and formic acid. These compounds are precursors or building blocks for many useful derivatives.

Methyl tert -Butyl Ether (MTBE) is a clear, colorless organic liquid compound. MTBE is widely used in global markets as a gasoline oxygenate. • Methyl t-butyl ether, MTBE, is widely used as the oxygenated additive to improve the characeristics of petrol. and its production grew over 20 years from almost zero to about 16 million tonnes a year in 2002. There has now been a dramatic turnaround in the US, Canada, Japan and in Europe. It was found that even very small amounts of MTBE can contaminate drinking water. Any seepage from storage tanks in petrol stations, which is not uncommon, leads to damage to the water course, This is because MTBE is much more soluble in water than petrol and any MTBE in the ground, is carried by rainwater through the soil, whereas petrol that leaks remains close to the tank.
• Many states in the US have now banned the use of MTBE in petrol. Among the first were California and New York. These two states accounted for 40% of the MTBE used for this purpose.  Another 23 US states followed their lead within two years.  Bioethanol (from biomass) is now the favoured oxygenate in the US, Canada and Japan in place of MTBE.  Two other ethers, ETBE and TAME, are also used in the US and particularly in Europe. China and many other countries still use MTBE as their additive of choice although in China, methanol is now being used more.
• Denmark in the EU was the first to reduce the use of MTBE but the amount used in the EU varies from country to country and between suppliers. For example in Finland, the proportion of MTBE in petrol is between 10 and 15%, with an average of 12%.
• The petrol in the UK uses much less MTBE, one of the lowest proportions in Europe often with1-2% MTBE and a range from 0 to 10%.  Apparently, the British are particularly price conscious.  As MTBE is relatively costly, it is only added in significant quantities to petrol, where the high octane rating of 98 is needed.  The petrol of octane rating 95, the most used, does not need an additive.

Methyl propyl ketone (MPK) or 2-Pentanone is a medium evaporating, urethane-grade solvent. It’s commonly used as a solvent for synthetic resins as well as in gravure printing inks and cleaning and surface preparation applications for the transportation industry. Though methyl propyl ketone is comparable to methyl ethyl ketone, MPK has a lower solvency and is more expensive.
Unlike other chemicals that are produced in a lab, methyl propyl ketone occurs naturally in Nicotiana tabacum, otherwise known as the tobacco plant. It can also grow in blue cheese as a metabolic product of Penicillium mold growth. The clear, colorless liquid has the odor of nail polish and is soluble in water.
MPK is an active solvent for most synthetic resins, such as acrylics, vinyls, epoxies and polyesters. Because it has a high solvency, low density and medium evaporation rate, it’s also useful as a letdown solvent for high-solids resins used in low VOC products.
