Remarks:

The most common oxygen scavengers in oilfield production are sodium bisulfite (SBS) and ammonium bisulfite (ABS). Ammonium bisulfite is more water soluble than sodium bisulfite and typically react with oxygen faster. However, ammonium in the ammonium bisulfite can promote bacteria growth.

Being a salt of a weak acid and a strong base, sodium bisulfite forms a significantly basic aqueous solution whereas ammonium bisulfite is only slightly basic at around pH 8. As a rule of thumb, 60ppm of 65wt% ammonium bisulfite is required to reduce the oxygen concentration in water from 9ppm to 50ppb.

The reaction of bisulfite with oxygen is typically faster at higher temperatures and can be facilitated by transition metal ion catalysts, e.g. Cobalt.

The most common applications of oxygen scavenger in oil and gas production are for seawater injection facilities, hydro-testing, and acid stimulation

Carbohydrazide is used as an oxygen scavenger in water treatment for boilers. It is an alternative to the hazardous and potentially carcinogenic hydrazine. Carbohydrazide reacts with oxygen to make water, nitrogen and urea.

Carbohydrazide also passivates metals and reduces metal oxides converting ferric oxide to ferrous oxide and converting cupric oxide to cuprous oxide.

Carbohydrazide is widely used in the production of drugs, herbicides, plant growth regulators, and dyestuffs. Carbohydrazide is a white crystalline solid with a melting point of 153-154 °C. It decomposes upon melting. It is very water soluble and largely insoluble in organic solvents.
 
 
 
Carbohydrazide Uses and Application:
 
Oxygen scrubber: carbohydrazide is used as an oxygen scrubber in boiler systems. Oxygen scrubbers remove oxygen gas from the boiler system to prevent corrosion.
Polymers: carbohydrazide can react with many aromatic compounds to create polymers.Carbohydrazide can be used as a curing agent for epoxide-type resins.
Photography: carbohyrazide is used in the silver halide diffusion process as one of the toners. Carbohydrazide is used to stabilize color developers that produce images of the azo-methine and azine classes.
