Composition in WaterIn aqueous solution, it exists as a mixture, with the hexafluorosilicate anion (SiF₆²⁻) being a prominent species

Applications

Industrial Uses
Water Fluoridation: Its most common use is to add fluoride to drinking water to help prevent dental caries (cavities).
Manufacturing: It's used to make aluminum fluoride and cryolite.
Materials Science: It acts as a hardener for cement and ceramics and is used in wood preservation.
Electronics: Used in the production of silicon chips and solar panels.
Organic Synthesis: It can be a reagent for cleaving Si-O bonds in organic chemistry.

Characteristics and notes

Hydrofluosilicic acid is a by-product of the process where phosphoric rock is treated with sulfuric acid to produce fertilizer.
The resulting hydrogen fluoride and silicon tetrafluoride gases are captured and scrubbed with water to form the acid.
