HYDRIODIC ACID 55% AR

Hydriodic acid is the aqueous solution of hydrogen iodide, HI — one of the strongest common mineral acids. RXSOL supplies the 55% analytical-reagent grade for laboratory and synthesis use: preparing iodides by reaction with metals, oxides, hydroxides and carbonates, and converting fatty alcohols and glyceryl ethers to alkyl iodides. The liquid is light-sensitive and darkens as free iodine forms, so it is packed in amber glass and stored cool and dark.

Frequently asked questions

What is hydroiodic acid used for?

Making metal iodides, as a reducing agent and iodinating reagent in organic synthesis (alkyl iodides from alcohols and ethers), and in analytical work where a strong, non-oxidising acid is needed.

Why does the acid turn brown?

Air and light oxidise iodide to iodine; a small amount of hypophosphorous acid is used in some grades as a stabiliser. Keep the bottle closed, cool and in the dark.

What pack sizes are available?

500 ml amber bottles; ships by road as corrosive goods with MSDS.
