Silver Nitrate 0.1 N solution

Silver nitrate 0.1 N is the standard volumetric solution for chloride titration (argentometric, Mohr or Volhard) in boiler water, cooling water, drilling fluids, potable water and brine, and for qualitative halide tests. RXSOL prepares it from AR-grade AgNO3 (purity ≥99.0%, CAS 7761-88-8, MW 169.87) in distilled water — 16.9876 g per litre for 0.1 N, since the equivalent weight equals the molecular weight — and supplies it in 50 ml to 1,000 ml amber bottles with a certificate of analysis. Chloride gives a white precipitate, bromide pale yellow, iodide yellow.

Applications

Preparation of 0.1M (0.1N) silver nitrate solution

AR silver nitrate has a purity of at least 99.9 per cent. Although an excellent primary standard it is still advisable to dry some finely powdered AgNO3 at 250 °C for 1–2 h, allowing to cool in a desiccator.

PROCEDURE

1.The molecular weight of AgNO3 is 169.876 (equivalent weight 169.876) and therefore 0.1M AgNO3 contains 16.9876 g per litre (in theory this weight should be multipled by the purity factor for AR silver nitrate, e.g. 1/0.999).
2.Weigh out accurately 8.4938 g dissolved in distilled water and transfer quantitatively to a 500 ml volumetric flask. Dilute to the mark and mix well.

Silver Nitrate crystal used in vacuum flask refill and mirror manufacture, silver plating, printing, corrosive agent in medicine, hair dye, analytical agent, preparation of other silver salt and colourfast ink.

We are expertise in manufacturing and supplying world class quality silver salts. We are most appreciated due to our unmatched quality silver salts that have excellent antiseptic properties.

Some of its specific applications include :

  • We are offering AR, CR, LR grade
  • Testing for chloride
  • In the production of pharmaceuticals
  • To prepare other silver salts
  • To silver mirrors
  • As a reagent in analysis

Dosage and directions

Silver Nitrate Helps to test Halogen Family Chlorine, Bromine and Iodine ions due to its characteristic change of colour as follows :::
Silver Nitrate + Chloride = White,
Silver Nitrate + Bromide = Pale Yellow,
Silver Nitrate + Iodide = Yellow.

Silver Nitrate also helps to find presence of Carbonate, Hydroxide, Sulfide and Phosphate ions.
For example: Pale Green=Carbonate, Brown=Hydroxide, Black=Sulfide.

Silver Nitrate is used in Oil Fields to determine the amount of Chloride ions in water and drilling fluids.

Characteristics and notes

ALWAYS dissolve Silver Nitrate powder into Distilled Water.
NEVER use Tap Water when dissolving Silver Nitrate powder – it will turn ‘milky’ (dilute Silver Chloride).

Frequently asked questions

How is 0.1 N silver nitrate prepared?

Dry AR silver nitrate at 250 °C for 1–2 h, cool in a desiccator, weigh 8.4938 g, dissolve in distilled water and make up to 500 ml (16.9876 g/L); standardise against sodium chloride. Never use tap water — chloride turns the solution milky.

What is the equivalent weight of AgNO3?

169.87 g — the same as its molecular weight, because one Ag⁺ reacts per molecule.

How is it stored?

In amber glass, away from light; it stains skin and fabric black.
