Ferrous Sulphate Heptahydrate

Ferrous sulphate heptahydrate (FeSO4·7H2O, green vitriol) is a blue-green crystalline salt, 98% assay with 19% iron minimum and 12% sulphur, 100% water-soluble, pH 3 at 10%. RXSOL supplies it to agriculture (lowering the pH of alkaline soil and correcting iron chlorosis), water and sewage treatment (coagulant and phosphate precipitant), cement (chromate reduction), pigment and feed manufacturers, and laboratories (AR grade). A certificate of analysis is issued per batch.

Overview

Ferrous Sulfate Heptahydrate is an inorganic salt and a mining chemical. Ferrous Sulphate Heptahydrate is an Inorganic Compound. Ferrous sulfate is used as a soil amendment for lowering the pH of a high alkaline soil so plants can more readily access the soil's nutrients. In horticulture it is used for treating iron chlorosis, a yellowing of plant leaves caused by iron deficiency.

Technical specifications

Currently chlorine is the most widely used disinfectant. ... Specifically, the disinfection efficacy of sulfate radical (SO4*-) was investigated. SO4*- is a very strong oxidant and generated from persulfate (S2O82-) by using ferrous iron (Fe2+) as an activator. This study is focused on the efficacy of SO4*- in promoting E.

Applications

Medically Pure Iron(2+) sulfate heptahydrate is a hydrate that is the heptahydrate form of iron(2+) sulfate. It is used as a source of iron in the treatment of iron-deficiency anaemia (generally in liquid-dosage treatments; for solid-dosage treatments, the monohydrate is normally used).

Dosage and directions

In Agriculture  Mix at the rate of 1-2 Tablespoons per gallon of water or 5-8 Pounds per 100 Gallons of water. Flowers & Vegetables: Apply at the rate of 1/4 to 1/2 pound. (1/2 to 1 cup) per 100 square feet. Trees & Shrubs: Apply at the rate of 1/2 to 1 pound.

Characteristics and notes

On heating, ferrous sulphate crystals lose water and anhydrous ferrous sulphate (FeSO4) is formed. ... On further heating, anhydrous ferrous sulphate decomposes to form ferric oxide (Fe2O3), sulphur dioxide (SO2) and sulphur trioxide (SO3). So, the gas emitted smells like burning sulphur.

Frequently asked questions

What is the agricultural dose?

Soil: ¼–½ lb (110–225 g) per 100 ft² for flowers and vegetables, ½–1 lb for trees and shrubs; foliar/drench: 1–2 tablespoons per gallon or 5–8 lb per 100 gallons of water.

What happens when ferrous sulphate is heated?

It loses its water of crystallisation to the anhydrous salt, then decomposes to ferric oxide, SO2 and SO3 — the burning-sulphur smell.

Is this the pharmaceutical grade?

This is technical/AR grade; the medicinal monohydrate and heptahydrate grades are supplied on request.
