Overview

Malathion is a nonsystemic, wide-spectrum organophosphate insecticide. It was one of the earliest organophosphate insecticides developed. Malathion is suited for the control of sucking and chewing insects on fruits and vegetables, and is also used to control mosquitoes, flies, household insects, animal parasites (ectoparasites), and head and body lice.

Dosage and directions

GENERAL DIRECTIONS FOR USE

Pesticides Malathion 96 ULV is used undiluted in specially designed aircraft or ground equipment capable of applying ultra low volumes for control of the insects indicated.

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT

For all ULV products used for agricultural crops (food and feed crops) and wild host plants in non-agricultural land, the following is required: For ULV Ground Applications: Limit the amount of active ingredient handled per day to 95 kg per person (approx. 70 ha at a rate of 1375 g a.i./ha, and 150 ha at a rate of 653 g a.i./ha). Wear cotton coveralls over long pants, long sleeved shirts, and chemical-resistant gloves during mixing/loading, application, clean-up and repair. For ULV Aerial Applications: Limit the amount of active ingredient handled per day to 1125 kg per person (approx. 820 ha at a rate of 1375 g a.i./ha, and 1700 ha at a rate of 653 g
a.i./ha).
Wear cotton coveralls over long pants, long sleeved shirts, and chemical-resistant gloves during mixing/loading, clean-up and repair. DO NOT contaminate irrigation or drinking water supplies or aquatic habitats by cleaning of equipment or disposal of wastes. Field sprayer application: DO NOT apply during periods of dead calm. Avoid application of this product when winds are gusty

Aerial application:

DO NOT apply when wind speed is greater than 16 km/h at flying height at the site of application.

Characteristics and notes

Use Precautions

Apply only when meteorological conditions at the treatment site allow for complete and even crop coverage. Apply only under conditions of good practice specific to aerial application as outlined in the National Aerial Pesticide Application Manual, developed by the Federal/Provincial/Territorial Committee on Pest Management and Pesticides.
Exercise special care: Use the correct equipment for the job. Use sufficient water for even distribution. Use low nozzle pressures (Below 300 kPa). Use appropriate buffer zones around sensitive areas such as water, urban and residential areas. Do not spray in winds exceeding 10-15 km per hour. Do not spray in dead calm near sensitive plants or when wind velocity and direction pose a risk of spray drift. A cloud of suspended droplets may drift onto sensitive plants when the wind comes up. Spray only when the wind is blowing away from a sensitive crop, shelter belt or garden.

Operator Precautions
Do not allow the pilot to mix chemicals to be loaded onto the aircraft. Loading of premixed chemicals with a closed system is permitted. It is desirable that the pilot have communication capabilities at each treatment site at the time of application. The field crew and the mixer/loaders must wear chemical resistant gloves, coveralls and goggles or face shield during mixing/loading, cleanup and repair. Follow the more stringent label precautions in cases where the operator precautions exceed the generic label recommendations on the existing ground boom label.

Safety and SDS

Read the safety data sheet before handling. Wear suitable gloves and eye protection.

SWALLOWED The acute oral toxicity is Moderate. Oral LD50 (rat) 2800mg/kg (Malathion).
For product Oral LD50 (rat) 2947mg/kg
EYE Moderate eye irritant.
SKIN The acute dermal toxicity is low, however repeated exposure may result in absorption of harmful amounts. Repeated skin contact may cause allergic reactions. Dermal LD50 (rabbit) 4100mg/kg (Malathion).
For product LD50 > 4315mg/kg.
INHALED The acute inhalation toxicity is moderate. Excessive exposure to dust may be harmful. Prolonged exposure to the dust may cause eye and respiratory irritation, dizziness and headaches. Inhalation LD50 (rat) = 5.2 mg/m 3 (4 hours) (Malathion).
CHRONIC Repeated exposure may cause cholinesterase inhibition. Avoid prolonged or repeated skin contact as the solvent in the product may cause dermatitis.
GENERAL In every case of suspected poisoning contact a doctor or a Poisons Information Centre immediately.
SWALLOWED Seek medical attention immediately. If more than 15 minutes from medical assistance, give one atropine tablet every 5 minutes until dryness of mouth occurs then seek medical attention immediately. NOTE: Do not give fluids/tablets if patient is unconscious or convulsing.
Eye Contact             Hold eyelids open and flush eyes with water for at least fifteen minutes. Seek medical attention immediately.
SKIN
Immediately remove contaminated clothing and wash skin thoroughly with soap and water for at least fifteen minutes. If symptoms of poisoning occur give atropine tablets as above and seek medical attention immediately.
INHALED Immediately remove patient to fresh air. If difficulty in breathing is experienced, give oxygen and artificial
respiration if necessary. If symptoms of poisoning occur, seek medical assistance immediately.
FIRST AID FACILITIES Soap, water, Ipecac Syrup APF, Atropine tablets.
ADVICE TO DOCTOR Malathion is a cholinesterase inhibitor. Preferred antidote: atropine by injection or atrovent/ipratropium by airway puff. This product contains petroleum type solvents and the benefits of induced vomiting must be weighed against possibility of chemical poisoning.
Flammability Flammable
Special Hazards from Substance Reacts violently with water.
Extinguishing Media Do NOT use water — use CO2, sand, or extinguishing powder.
Special Fire Fighting Procedures Use full-face, self-contained breathing apparatus with full protective clothing to prevent contact with skin and eyes. See Section 10 for decomposition products.
If Material is Released / Spilled Use appropriate personal protective equipment. Avoid dust formation. Avoid breathing dust, vapors, mist, or gas. Isolate spill area and provide ventilation. Evacuate personnel to safe areas. Vacuum up spill using a high efficiency particulate absolute (HEPA) air filter and place in a closed container for disposal.
Environmental Precautions Isolate runoff to prevent environmental pollution.

SPILLAGE Wear appropriate clothing while cleaning up spill (see Personal Protection). Extinguish any ignition sources. Prevent entry into drainage systems, waterways, rivers, etc. Apply absorbent material such as sand, earth or attapulgite to contain the spill. Sweep up the material when absorption is complete. Wash contaminated surfaces with a mild bleach solution (sodium hypochlorite).
