Potassium Alum

Potassium alum — potash alum, fitkari — is the double sulphate of potassium and aluminium, KAl(SO4)2·12H2O (also written K2SO4·Al2(SO4)3·24H2O). RXSOL supplies it as a white crystalline powder with purity above 98% by EDTA titration, iron below 0.001% and chloride passing the limit test. It is used as a coagulant in water purification, as a mordant in dyeing, in leather tanning, fire-proofing of textiles, baking powder and, in agriculture, to correct alkaline soil.

Applications

Potassium alum is commonly used in water purification, Leather Tanning, Dyeing, Fireproof Textiles, and Baking Powder.

Dosage and directions

Potash alum is a chemical compound widely used as the potassium sulfate dodecahydrate. It is double salt that is used commonly in medicine and the water treatment process. Potash alum is also known as potassium alum or potassium aluminium sulfate. The chemical formula of potash alum is K2SO4.Al2(SO4)3.24H2O. It is also commonly referred to as ‘fitkari.’

Characteristics and notes

Agricultural Application : Potash Alum also used to balance pHof SOIL. When Soil is ALKALINE, then use approx 1 Kg Fitkari Diluted solution per Acre basis. NEVER use Fitkari for ACIDIC SOIL and Neutral pH soil. Fitkari, also known as alum, is used in agriculture to improve soil fertility, plant health, and crop production. It can also be used as a pesticide to kill insects and treat fungal and bacterial infections.

Soil fertility
Fitkari can improve soil structure, pH, and nutrient availability.

Plant health
Fitkari can help plants absorb nutrients, strengthen cell structure, and promote robust growth.

Pesticides

Fitkari can be be used as a pesticide to kill insects like aphids, cabbageworms, and cutworms.
Fungal and bacterial infections
Fitkari's antiseptic properties can help protect plants from fungal and bacterial infections

Frequently asked questions

What is the melting point of potassium alum?

The dodecahydrate melts at 92–95 °C (198–203 °F) in its own water of crystallisation; it loses water on further heating and the anhydrous salt decomposes near 200 °C. Molar mass: 258.19 g/mol anhydrous, 474.37 g/mol dodecahydrate; density 1.725 g/cm³.

What is the formula of potash alum?

KAl(SO4)2·12H2O. The older textbook form K2SO4·Al2(SO4)3·24H2O describes the same salt.

How is fitkari used on soil?

For alkaline soil only: about 1 kg of alum dissolved and applied per acre lowers pH; never use it on acidic or neutral soil. It is also used as a mild pesticide against aphids and cutworms and as an antiseptic against fungal and bacterial infection on plants.
