Remarks:
Formic acid removes scale by reacting with mineral deposits like calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate to form soluble compounds, which then dissolve and detach from the surface. For household applications, a weaker formic acid-based descaler, like Cillit Bang Limescale & Shine, can be used to remove limescale from kettles and showerheads. In industrial settings, more concentrated formic acid, sometimes mixed with other acids and corrosion inhibitors, is used to clean evaporators, heat exchangers, and other equipment by dissolving mineral scale and preventing corrosion.
